WILL YOU EVER BE HAPPY AGAIN?
"Are we ever going to be happy again?," the German population asked themselves at the end of the Second World War. A significant part of the Serbian population is facing the same question at the start of the new millennium. Germans called that moment 'hour zero', to symbolise their desire for a fresh start. But this appeared to be an illusion, because one's cannot escape one's own history; one can only hope to survive it.
Will you ever be happy again? employs documentary strategies to explore how nationality influences one's personal identity. Authentic autobiographical accounts of its performers - one Serbian, one German - are the ingredients of this performance.
"Zullen we ooit weer gelukkig zijn?, vroeg de Duitse bevolking zich af aan het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Een beduidend deel van de Servische bevolking staat nu voor diezelfde vraag bij het ontwaken in het nieuwe millennium. De Duitsers noemden dat moment 'uur nul' om daarmee hun wens naar een frisse start te symboliseren. Het bleek allemaal een illusie, want men kan niet ontsnappen aan de eigen geschiedenis; alleen maar te hopen het te overleven.
Will you ever be happy again? maakt gebruik van documentaire strategieën om de invloed van nationaliteit op persoonlijke identiteit te onderzoeken. Autobiografische verhalen van de performers - één Servische, één Duits - vormen de ingrediënten van de voorstelling.
